Every year we went to the Narcottage for the Victoria Day long weekend. Eventually it became elaborate: generator, full sound system, plenty of DJ’s and a full on party atmosphere. In the middle of this long run of epic events, I managed to play a record-breaking 19.5h set, and capture much of it on tape.

Sublight: “Phunk ov Doom” Classic DJ set
Heavy funky breaks classics.
Sublight: “…in the Phunk Glock” Classic DJ set
And the wind-up and wind-down on side B.
Sublight: “19 shots…” Classic DJ set
Firing up a range of funky breaks classics on Side A of the tape.
Sublight: “Slip” Classic DJ set
Classic Funky Breaks. I was always a huge fan of breaks, and from 1993-4 onward, I’d always make sure to catch John E’s sets at Toronto parties as he was one of the first major breaks players to really throw down in the city. Pretty soon I was picking up south Florida, west coast and Philly tracks on a regular basis.
Sublight: “The New Groove” Classic DJ set
Bouncy & brazen and finishing funky.
Sublight: “Trip the Rip” Classic DJ set
And then trip-hop and breaks got kinda heavy.
Sublight: “Falling” Classic DJ set
A classic party set filled with happiness. This is, to some extent, where it began. Learning how to bring all of these ecstatic sounds together into something that told a story, brought beauty forward, and raised emotions. And once I started, I could never stop.
Sublight: “Junglism” Classic DJ set
An early foray into the broken beat.
